Great Technical Hiking Boot

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:

Overall a great off trail and technical trail boot. They are pretty warm so these are not an all year boot at lower elevations but fall through spring they are fantastic. If you can deal with the heat then you could make the summer work. Pros: Grippiest sole I have ever hiked in - fantastic on rock and light ice. The integrated cuff absolutely keeps debris out. The lacing system allows you to get the fit perfect on you foot. The ankle support is exactly where it needs to be. The boot stays perfectly dry with the vortex and is suitably breathable. Cons: Getting this boot on fast takes practice. The first 3 to 5 times you are going to struggle and wonder if it is worth it. They run small in the toe box (just look at the picture it shouldn’t need to be said). This can take some getting used to but that is the case with 90% of approach shoes and technical boots (except Oboz). The tread will show wear fast if you use with any consistency on roads/pavement. They sticky nubs get ground down on road runs (I ruck a lot an hit some roads). These really are for off road. Overall my second favorite boot ever and hey were so great I bought my wife a set of the low top version without gortex. I saw the review above saying the boots didn’t hold up for 6 months - I cannot see how they didn’t as I wear mine for almost everyday Sept - June for rucking and hiking and though dirty they are still good to go.

3 stars for the sole

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Never had a boot give me blisters like these. Tried over and over to break these in but they ALWAYS end up giving me bloody heels (not kidding). The fabric loop that you must grab with a death grip to ram your foot inside the gaiter (see reviews below) is stitched into the rear of the boot. For me ends up feeling like i have a rock in the back of my heel right below the achilles. Love the soles of these, they are very sticky and nimble, a nice light boot. Perhaps I just got a bad pair but could not recommend as its the only pair of boots ive genuinely not found to break in with use

Go-to shoes for mountain biking, hiking

Familiarity:

I am now on my second pair of Wildfire Edge shoes and bought Mid GTX because they are waterproof and the gaiter is supposed to keep debris out. I really love these shoes for their fit and the grippyness of the sole. I ride (MTB) in OR, mainly in the mountains and these shoes are very well suited to riding, the sole grips into my flat pedals like nothing else. The stiff front of the shoe helps putting the power on the pedals. If you have to put your foot out or hob from the bike they grip well on the sand, roots and rocks. The fit is great for me, no blisters or pressure points. Hiking and basically everything else outdoors, they are comfortable, even on long hikes (downhill). The regular Edge has one disadvantage, it is not waterproof, the GTX is. They are also a bit warmer. The gaiter keeps most of the debris out, but not all. Putting them on is a bit tricky and needs some getting used to. They are pretty pricey, but deliver the value. It works for me.

then this boot is for you. Putting these on is a painful exercise in futility. I have an easier time putting my ski boots on! Once on, they are comfortable, but IMO, the effort is not worth it. If they wanted a cuff seal, they should have gone with a zipper or something.

Blown out in six months.

As a trail builder, I was attracted to these boots for several reasons: light weight, durable materials, the built-in gaiter, and nice lugs on the sole. I was going to be wearing them 10 hours a day for five days a week. I was blown away by the quality for the first month or so, although the gaiter feature made the boots very difficult to put on, difficult to take off, and did not keep debris out of the boots. A better option is to purchase regular boots and a set of gaiters. About one month in I had shoelace loops on both boots break, not a huge deal. Here's what they look like after six months of use. I'm very disappointed in their longevity, given the cost of the boots. They are not "a true workhorse" as their employee review suggests. They have some good features, but the main feature was a pain, and they just didn't last at all.

A True Workhorse, Without the Weight

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

*Full Disclosure* I am employed by Oberalp NA, the parent company of Salewa, so make of this review what you will. This is my favorite boot in our line. I have been able to use a few others, but nothing did the trick for me like this one. It is important to know that this boot is fairly technical, so your daily wear-to-work boot this will probably not be. This boot is made to be on technical trail and off trail terrains. The edging plate in the forefoot gives it added stiffness for when you are really trying to get a purchase on small footholds for technical scrambling, and the full down-to-the-toe lacing system means you can dial in your lacing and lock down your foot as precisely as possible. Not scrambling up the side of mountains? No problem. I recently got my dad a pair for use at our family cabin, and he loves all those same features to work in the rugged uneven terrain surrounding the cabin. It is waterproof, rugged, provides plenty of grip and stability, and keeps out pesky rocks and shrubs with its integrated gaiter. The only issues I have ever had with this are the sizing and the gaiter. For sizing, since this is a more technical fit, I generally suggest going a half size up from your standard size to give both precision and comfort. As for the gaiter, it just takes some getting used to ;)
