Why We Like The Ultra 4 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Shoe
The X Ultra 4 Mid GTX Wide Hiking Shoe feels more agile than the average mid-height hiking boot, except without losing any of the stable support we'd expect. We like that Salomon's new Advanced Chassis protects sensitive articulations without inhibiting freedom of movement.

Comfortable, good support, POOR traction

More stable and more comfortable than X ultra 2 and 3 BUT ... I lost traction on wet hike up a mountain in a light drizzle. I was even having trouble gripping before the rain started. I slipped on loose rocks, dry rocks, and wet rocks. I even fell twice, once sliding down about 20 feet. Previous versions had better traction even though the outsole seems to be the exact same as previous models. If they put some Vibram soles on these and I'd give them 5 star most likely. I will never wear this in back country again! Too dangerous They also run a half size small compared to how Salomon shoes have fit over the past 15 years.

Not for wide flat feet
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
Like the X Ultra 3 Wide, the toe box is nice and wide but the arch area is too narrow. When I step, the arch area of my foot is hanging over the rubber sole and very uncomfortable. They need to make the arch area of the sole wider. I purchased both the X Ultra 3 and X Ultra 4 and both had the same issue so they were returned. Settled on the Keen Targhee 3 as it had proportionately wide toe box and arch.
